How to proofread your own essay before you submit

You have written your draft — congratulations, that is the hard part. But the difference between a good grade and a great one often comes down to the errors you cannot see anymore because you are too close to your own words. Here is how to proofread your own academic work properly before you submit it.

1. Step away before you start

Give yourself at least a few hours (a night is better) between finishing your draft and proofreading it. Fresh eyes catch mistakes that tired ones skim straight past.

2. Read it aloud

Reading your work out loud forces you to slow down and hear clumsy phrasing, run-on sentences, and missing words. If a sentence makes you run out of breath, it is probably too long.

3. Check one type of error at a time

Do a pass for spelling, then a separate pass for punctuation, then one for consistency (tense, spelling conventions, capitalisation). Trying to catch everything at once is how things slip through.

4. Watch the usual suspects

  • Their / there / they’re and your / you’re
  • Missing or mismatched citations
  • Inconsistent heading styles and spacing
  • Tense that drifts mid-paragraph
  • Words your spellchecker accepts but you did not mean (e.g. “form” vs “from”)

5. Make your citations consistent

Whatever style you use — APA, MLA, Chicago, Harvard — apply it the same way every time. Check that every in-text citation has a matching entry in your reference list, and vice versa.

6. Read it backwards for spelling

Starting from the last sentence and working up breaks the flow of meaning, so your brain focuses on the words themselves rather than the argument. It is a classic proofreader’s trick for catching typos.

7. Get a second pair of eyes

No matter how careful you are, you will always miss things in your own writing. A professional proofreader checks grammar, clarity, and formatting and returns your document with tracked changes, so you stay the author and learn from every correction. If you would like that final polish, you can get an instant proofreading quote in under a minute.
